Marking the Martyrs, 2018

Coinciding with major celebrations and events nationwide, on the 4th June 2018, Blott Studio will be hosting an exhibition entitled Marking the Martyrs, marking the death of Emily Wilding Davison, the first martyr to the suffrage cause. The exhibition’s focus will be on both the sacrifices our foremothers made and the ongoing struggle that women face, and seeks to educate, and commemorate the physical martyrdom of the Suffragettes.

On June 2nd at the Preview event, there will be a town centre ‘Suffragette’ choral parade in order to attract the general public’s attention and encourage engagement with the project, increasing awareness of women’s history.  Throughout June there will be community workshops taking place to create a banner & sashes for the event which will help to bring ‘history to life’, and contributing artists will be on hand to talk to the public on the run up to, and throughout, the exhibition.  Hazel Reeves, MRBS SWA FRSA, winner of the Emmeline Pankhurst sculpture commission 2017, will be exhibiting one of her acclaimed maquettes of Emmeline Pankhurst, one of 12, titled ‘Rise up Women.’
